Michele is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, who specializes in helping people overcome trauma. Michele earned Laaksonen her Doctorate’s in Psychology from the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology.
Her primary areas of specialty include: trauma (such as sexual trauma, combat trauma, traumatic bereavement, and other high stress events), dissociation, and gender dysphoria. She also has a focus in working with individuals who identify as LGBTIQA+ or who are currently or were previously in the military.
As a relational therapist, Michele takes a collaborative approach with her clients. She believes clients are the experts of their own lives, they have the ability within them to help them reach wellness, and that they deserve to make informed decisions about their care. To meet the needs of individual clients, Michele utilizes various treatment methods, such as Rogerian Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, modified-Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, crisis intervention, and cognitive behavioral strategies.
Michele has worked with trauma from many angles – as an advocate, as a therapist for those who have been victims of crime, as a therapist for those who have perpetrated crimes, as a lecturer, and as an administrator overseeing forensic medical systems. She has also worked in a variety of settings, such as community mental health, inpatient, prisons, college, and military/veteran facilities, and worked at the local, state, and federal levels. These roles have allowed her to understand mental health through a complex relationship of medical, biological, social, cultural, psychological, and legal systems and to value integrative care.
