Provider type: Therapist
Kim is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who joined Commonwealth Counseling in June 2013. Kim earned a B.S. from Virginia Tech and a Master of Social Work from VCU.
Her theoretical preference is cognitive behavioral therapy. She focuses on pragmatic, strengths based, and solution focused interventions. Kim provides her clients with therapeutic homework, which may include reading, writing, and other behavioral tasks. When a client has been prescribed psychotropic medication, Kim strongly believes that communication between the prescribing physician and the therapist is an important aspect of treatment.
Special areas of interest include mood disorders, adjustment disorders, and relationship difficulties. Kim also has many clients who are in therapy to address codependency and low self-esteem. In addition, Kim enjoys working with families who have a loved one diagnosed with a mood disorder, including serious mental illness, as this can often provoke or exacerbate stress within the family system.
Kim has experience working in a psychiatric hospital, in Chesterfield County Public Schools, in community mental health, and in private practice. She is very familiar with a multitude of community resources to supplement therapy. She is a volunteer with NAMI (National Association on Mental Illness), and has served as a Field Instructor for VCU School of Social Work graduate students.
Kim maintains her membership in the National Association of Social Workers. She is looking forward to seeing current and new clients in Commonwealth Counseling’s Midlothian office.
