William E Nichelson, Ph.D., LCP
Dr. Nichelson is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee. His clinical experience includes working as the PTSD and Substance Use Disorder psychologist for a Veteran Affairs Medical Center, and a staff psychologist in university counseling centers. He has received advanced training in Emotion Focused Therapy, along with therapies designed to treat PTSD. He has extensive experience helping clients with anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, disordered eating and body image concerns, relationship issues, couples counseling, LGBTQ concerns, men’s issues, OCD, and ADHD. He enjoys working with adults of all ages, including active-duty military/veterans and their families.
Dr. Nichelson emphasizes a collaborative approach to treatment, recognizing that each therapy experience will be most effective when uniquely tailored to the client’s individual needs and strengths. By providing an environment of safety, acceptance, validation, and trust, he creates the conditions for a healthy relationship that enhances and fosters the growth and well being of his clients. He draws from a variety of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Interpersonal Process Therapy (IPT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE). Additionally, he views his clients through a multicultural lens in order to understand the impact of personal and cultural values. Prior to beginning his education and training as a psychologist, he completed a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Oregon and worked as a software engineer. His experience in the field of information technology has allowed him to develop unique perspectives that enhance his work as a psychologist.
