John Benesek, Psy.D., LCP
Dr. Benesek is a licensed clinical psychologist who joined Commonwealth Counseling in 2012. He received his Psy.D., in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hartford and interned at Mississippi State Hospital. Following this, he worked with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Jackson, MS, where he worked primarily with tobacco cessation, substance abuse/dependence, and group therapy. Following this, he returned to Virginia and worked at Central State Hospital (forensic unit), Rivers Correctional Institution (Winton, NC), and the Virginia Department of Corrections (Community Corrections), prior to being hired with McGuire VA Medical Center, where he has worked since 2004. In addition to my private practice, I am employed as a psychologist at McGuire Veteran Administration Medical Center. He also holds an Assistant Professor position with VCU School of Medicine (Psychiatry). In addition to his primary emphasis on PTSD, he has experience with patients with a variety of problems and mental health disorders including psychosis, mood disorders, anxiety, adjustment disorders, and relationship concerns.
Dr. Benesek practices in the Midlothian office as a cognitive behavioral therapist and is trained to work with adults. His practice at Commonwealth Counseling will emphasize promoting health through behavioral change; treating mood and anxiety disorders; facilitating stress management and coping; and counseling couples.
