Tobacco Country is First in the Nation for New Smoking Cessation Program

Dameron Center for Smoking Cessation Aims to Double the Average Success Rate

RICHMOND, VA -- (March 5, 2005) - The heart of Tobacco Country will be the first in the nation for a new smoking cessation program that combines the latest medical and behavioral research to substantially increase participant success rates over those found in other programs. In fact, according to a national study by the Center For Disease Control in Atlanta only 22% of smokers that try to quit will actually succeed using conventional methods. The program pioneer and founder of the Dameron Center for Smoking Cessation, Dr. David Dameron, is best known for his acclaimed work in helping people recover from drug and substance abuse addictions. Dameron used this knowledge as a basis to develop a 12 month program which empowers smokers by providing them with the skills, support, and accountability that they need to quit.

According to Dr. Dameron, "Nicotine is the most addictive drug in use today with the lowest recovery rate of any drug that we know of. To start smoking is a clear choice. The choice to quit however is taken away by the effects of nicotine. Our program provides people who want to quit with the choice to do so. We combine a number of well-documented interventions with an in-depth understanding of the triggers that cause the individual to smoke. The key is replacing these triggers with new behavior that will improve emontional functioning. We expect this program will increase success rates for our clients dramatically."

Dameron's program is not a "quick-fix." It starts with a thorough health evaluation provided by program physician, Dr. Randy Baggesen. "This health exam starts the program with a wake-up call to the client as to the physical consequences of smoking. Most clients will have never experienced an exam as thorough as this one, and it sets the tone for the lifestyle changes to come," says Baggesen.

A six week regimin that leads clients through the process of permanantly quitting is then followed by ten months of close monitoring and support. "Our client's success is our only concern, and research clearly shows that we must be actively involved with clients for a period of a year to provide them what they need to be successful," says Dameron. Technology enables the Dameron Center to provide this monitoring for a full year. Each client receives a private Web Blog to chronicle their experience and interact with members of their own Accountability Team.

Within approximately six months, clients of the Dameron Center find themselves serving on the Accountability Teams of new clients of the program. This final intervention may be the most powerful (and unique) of any. Allowing a person to recognize their own success and helping someone else to achieve the same is a wonderful reward.
