What’s New

Welcome Drs. Laird and Bobba to CCA! – 04/23/2018

Barbara Laird, EdD, RN, PMHNP/CNS-BC joined CCA in November of 2017 and is based out of the Midlothian office. Dr. Laird is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist. Her primary focus is on medication management. She believes in a problem-focused/problem-solving approach.

Sai Bobba, MD joined CCA in February of this year and works with children and adults in the West End office. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry. Dr. Bobba completed her Psychiatry residency from Texas Tech University Health Sciences in 2017. Her background in general medicine, as well as her cultural background, influences her mind-body approach to medication management.

Welcome Drs. Spencer Cruz-Katz and Bruce Stevens to CCA! – 06/18/2017

We are excited to welcome Spencer Cruz-Katz, PhD and Bruce Stevens, MD to Commonwealth Counseling!

Dr. Cruz-Katz is a licensed clinical psychologist who joins the West End office of Commonwealth Counseling Associates in June 2017. He is a graduate of Fordham University where he earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in child and family treatment in 2016. Dr. Cruz-Katz has over 20 years in the field. Throughout his career, he has focused on improving personal mental health management, lessening the impact of difficulties encountered or troubling experiences, and increasing communication and honesty among individuals. He is available for work with children ages 8 and up, young adults, adults, couples, and families.

Dr. Stevens joins Commonwealth Counseling’s Midlothian office in June 2017. Dr. Stevens received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin (formerly Marquette University) located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1992. He went on to complete his Preliminary Medicine internship and Psychiatry residency there as well. Dr. Stevens is board certified in Psychiatry by the National Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and treats adult and geriatric patients.

CCA Welcomes Dr. Bill Nichelson! 01/05/2017

Dr. Bill Nichelson, Ph.D., LCP, joins CCA in January 2017 as a clinical psychologist working with adults in the Hanover office. Dr. Nichelson emphasizes a collaborative approach to treatment, recognizing that each therapy experience will be most effective when uniquely tailored to the client’s individual needs and strengths. By providing an environment of safety, acceptance, validation, and trust, he creates the conditions for a healthy relationship that enhances and fosters the growth and well being of his clients. He draws from a variety of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Interpersonal Process Therapy (IPT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE).

Welcome Amber Tate MS, PMHNP-BC to CCA! – 10/17/2016

Amber Tate joins CCA in October 2016. She is a certified nurse practitioner who obtained a Bachelor of Nursing degree and a Master of Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She will work in the Midlothian office and will provide treatment for both children and adults.

Amber worked at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children for 3 years prior to coming to CCA. During this time she developed skills in collaborative problem solving and trauma informed care while working with a wide range of mental illnesses. Amber has a primary interest in treating ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders.

Welcome Dr. Maryann McCoul to CCA! – 10/03/2016

Dr. Maryann McCoul, Ph.D., LCP, joins CCA in October 2016 as a clinical psychologist working with adults and seniors in the Midlothian office. She encourages clients to explore curiosities and assumptions about self, how their past influences their present, and patterns of behaviors and functioning that may both interfere and support their current situations. Her expertise includes working with depression, anxiety, loss, PTSD, anger management, chronic illness, and sexual orientation issues.

Welcome Dr. Ashley Foresman to CCA! – 02/08/2016

Dr. Ashley Foresman, Psy.D., LCP, joins CCA in February 2016 as a clinical psychologist working with adolescents, and adults in the Midlothian office. Her clinical interests include, but are not limited to: depression, processing disorders, trauma/PTSD, stress and anxiety-related disorders, mood disorders, ADHD, as well as women’s issues and LGBT concerns. Dr. Foresman also incorporates elements of interpersonal psychotherapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral strategies well as mindfulness techniques into her work.

CCA Welcomes Dr. Andrea Weisman – 07/18/2015

Dr. Andrea Weisman joins the Midlothian office of Commonwealth Counseling Associates as of July 2015. She works primarily with adolescents, adults, couples and group therapy as well as with a variety of presenting concerns such as feelings of depression, anxiety, relationship discord and family distress, decision-making and general life transitions. Some of Dr. Weisman’s areas of interest include LGBTQ, transitioning and gender non-conforming. She has also worked extensively with a diverse population, including Native American and Buddhist clients.
Her approach to therapy is person centered and reality theory based. Dr. Weisman believes in a holistic view and sees great value in understanding and treating the whole person.

Welcome Dr. Matthew Stone, Psy.D. and Gwendolyn Bohn, LCSW

CCA is pleased to welcome Dr. Matthew Stone and Gwendolyn Bohn to CCA.

Dr. Stone is based out of the Hanover and West End Offices. He practices an integrated psychotherapeutic approach with teens, adults and couples. A safe exploratory relationship is central to his work, allowing his clients to express thoughts and feelings freely, including aspects of themselves that were previously not fully known. Dr. Stone treats a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders and emotional difficulties including depression, anxiety, bipolar and related disorders, trauma- and stressor-related reactions and couples and relational problems.

Gwen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who specializes in working with children, adolescents, and young adult women. Gwen strongly believes in a holistic approach to care. She begins therapy by attempting to build a strong rapport with her clients, focusing on strengths and offering unconditional positive regard. Areas of specialty include anxiety, including OCD; mood disorders; ADHD/ADD, trauma; grief and loss; disordered eating; separation and blended family; stress management; parenting education; and healthy relationships. Preferred modalities include behavior modification, cognitive behavioral strategies, and mindfulness techniques.

Commonwealth Counseling Welcomes Dr. Jennifer Cameron! — 03/02/15

Jennifer Cameron, Ph.D., joins the Midlothian office specializing in assisting clients at the intersection of physical health and mental health. She works with adult clients and understands that making healthy life changes can be very difficult, even when it is the thing you want to do most. Therapeutic approaches include motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral therapy, along with mindfulness and a variety of relaxation strategies. She is also influenced by acceptance and commitment therapy. Dr. Cameron has worked with persons with heart diseases, diabetes, chronic pain, and those seeking to lose weight, among many other concerns often presenting in the primary care setting.

Dr. Sarah Benton originally joined CCA in February 2010. She has returned June of this year to our Hanover office on a part time basis. As a clinical psychologist who primarily offers child, individual and family therapy, her clinical interest is in providing cognitive behavioral therapy for children and adolescents. Dr. Benton’s areas of specialization include working with children with medical diseases and their families to improve overall coping methods and compliance with treatment.

Welcome Dr. Jenee’ Lewis-Walker to our Hanover office! 01/14/14

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Jenee’ Lewis-Walker, Psy.D., ABPP to our Hanover office! She is a licensed clinical psychologist who joins Commonwealth Counseling in February of 2014. Dr. Walker’s clinical experience includes working with children, adolescents, and adults from a variety of ethnic, genders, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds, providing services such as psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and research design. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings such as mental health clinics, residential treatment facilities, detention centers, and outpatient private practice.

Two CCA Clinicians Receive the 2013 Best Beside Manner Award, presented by OurHealth magazine — 12/10/13

Votes for the 2013 Best Bedside Manner Award were cast by the local community with first place to Dr. James Bullock in the category of Psychology & Counseling. Dr. Laura Worrel received third place in the category of Psychiatry. Congrats to you both!

New Clinician Joins CCA — 8/27/13

We are happy to welcome Dr. Jennifer Lumpkin, Psy.D., ABPP to our Hanover office. Dr. Lumpkin is a licensed clinical psychologist and board certified rehabilitation psychologist who joined Commonwealth Counseling in 2013. Dr. Lumpkin has worked full-time as a neuropsychologist and rehabilitation psychologist at McGuire VA since 2007 and will offer services to Commonwealth Counseling on a part-time basis.

Dr. Lumpkin also practices as a cognitive-behavioral therapist and is trained to work with adults from age 18 through the life span. Dr. Lumpkin has experience working with individuals 65+ in the context of neuropsychological assessment and psychotherapy, as she once worked as a consultant in local nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

CCA Welcomes Dr. Gregory Fisher — 6/21/13

Commonwealth Counseling Associates is pleased to welcome Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist John Gregory Fisher, MD to the medical staff at our Hanover office.

Dr. Fisher received his medical degree and completed his residency and fellowship training at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He is Board Certified in General Psychiatry and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child Psychiatry.
Prior to joining CCA, Dr. Fisher practiced for over 20 years at Centra Health System’s Virginia Baptist Hospital. For the last seven years he served as Medical Director of the hospital’s acute inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit.

Commonwealth Counseling Welcomes Kimberly Giancaspro – 5/28/13

We are delighted to welcome Kimberly K. Giancaspro, LCSW to Commonwealth Counseling!

Kimberly begins with CCA this June as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She earned a B.S. from Virginia Tech and a Master of Social Work from VCU. Special areas of interest include mood disorders, adjustment disorders, and relationship difficulties. Kim also has many clients who are in therapy to address codependency and low self-esteem. In addition, Kim enjoys working with families who have a loved one diagnosed with a mood disorder, including serious mental illness, as this can often provoke or exacerbate stress within the family system.

CCA Doctors Launch New iPhone App — 2/14/13

Doctors at CCA have launched a new iPhone app called eMotions Tracker to help you track your emotions and significant life events. Results are then plotted on a graph, to aid in analyzing trends, finding patterns, and increasing self-awareness. We are pleased to welcome Kate T. Tibbs, RN, PMHNP-BC to Commonwealth Counseling!

Kate Tibbs joins CCA this February as a Family Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. At CCA, Mrs. Tibbs provides treatment for both children and adults at our West End and Midlothian offices. Through both inpatient and outpatient training, Mrs. Tibbs developed expertise and interest in treating mood disorders, ADHD and anxiety disorders. Commonwealth Counseling Welcomes Jennifer Shatzkin & Dr. Beth McGraw — 12/28/12

It is a delight to welcome Jennifer Shatzkin, LCSW and Beth McGraw, Clinical Psychologist to Commonwealth Counseling!

Jennifer Shatzkin is a counselor in the Midlothian office with ten years of clinical experience working with adults in various settings with a multitude of concerns. Ms. Shatzkin’s specialty areas include mood and anxiety disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (combat and noncombat related), substance use problems, addictive behaviors, chronic and acute pain issues, couples therapy and relationship issues. Dr. Beth McGraw recently began working in the West End office and plans to work with adults specializing in a range of diagnoses including mood disorders, anxiety disorders and personality disorders. In addition to her clinical experience, she has received further specialized training in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (related to both sexual trauma and combat) as well as Borderline Personality Disorder. While she has a deep interest in continuing to treat those affected by military issues, she looks forward to working with all adults who are motivated to make positive changes in their lives. Commonwealth Counseling Welcomes Drs. Rowan & Benesek — 9/21/12

We are pleased to welcome Drs. Kimberly Rowan and John Benesek to Commonwealth Counseling Associates.

Dr. Rowan began working at CCA in August 2012. Her therapeutic style involves an Interpersonal Process Therapy approach to counseling in which she focuses on building a strong healing therapeutic alliance with her clients. She integrates Cognitive Behavior Therapy techniques and a Multicultural Perspective into her work while also providing psychoeducation to help her clients develop healthy coping skills. Particular areas of interest include relationship difficulties, stress management, mood disorders, identity concerns, and both multicultural and LGBT-related challenges. Dr. Benesek practices as a cognitive behavioral therapist and is trained to work with adults. Commonwealth Counseling Welcomes Drs. Fedyszen & Kilgour — 5/18/12

We are pleased to welcome Drs. Anne Fedyszen and Jordan Kilgour to Commonwealth Counseling Associates. Dr. Fedyszen has been in practice in the Richmond area for 16 years. She is Board Certified in Adult and in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
